Secrets, Spies, and Codebreakers

I want to share a fascinating article I came across this morning about a pivotal battle in World War II.

Churchill described the Battle of El Alamein as the “end of the beginning.” It marked the first time the Axis army was defeated in Northern Africa and it stopped what up until then was their inexorable advance. It was a major turning point in the war and prevented the Axis from taking the entire Middle East.

In his article, The Espionage That Won – And Almost Lost – the War at El Alamein, author Gershom Gorenberg describes how the combination of spies, codebreakers, and pure luck helped the Allies to victory in July 1942. For those of you who want to take on a deeper dive, I invite you to read Gorenberg’s book, War of Shadows: Codebreakers, Spies, and the Secret Struggle to Drive the Nazis from the Middle East.
