Grown Men Cry Out at Night is the first in a series of novels featuring Caspar Lehman. The entire series encompasses the entire Cold War period through the fall of the Soviet Union.
I’ve already started on the second novel in the series, a piece with a working title The Order That Never Came. It is the story of how the Soviets deployed SS-3 and SS-4 medium range ballistic missiles to East Germany as early as 1959, three years before the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. These missiles were the same as those deployed to Cuba, but they were never detected.
The missile unit deployed to East Germany was garrisoned at two facilities, Fuerstenberg 291 and Vogelsang 4823. Unlike the tactical missile units, which reported to the Commander, Group, Soviet Forces in Germany, the unit garrisoned in Fuerstenberg and Vogelsang was part of the Strategic Rocket Forces, and received its orders from Moscow.
I’m looking forward to sharing this largely unknown story. Readers will learn how we had much of the information necessary to deduce that these missiles were indeed deployed to East Germany. But there was no “smoking gun” that allowed intelligence analysts to definitely posit their existence. Like Grown Men Cry Out at Night, this story is based on true events. We had the information, but couldn’t connect the dots.
